The emergence of Schelpwijk is directly related to the large growth in the number of Shell employees. Between 1935 and 1940 Emmastad, part of Groot Kwartier, and Julianadorp were built. After 1955, Shell's construction activities declined and housing construction eventually stopped, with the exception of Schelpwijk. Schelpwijk was built in the early 1970s with funds from the Shell Pension Fund. The residents themselves see Schelpwijk as a middle-class neighborhood. It is a very centrally located neighborhood, close to schools, sports facilities and shops.
