Surroundings

Mahuma district consists of high terrace opposite Hato, Seru Mahuma, and the lower, fertile part of Mahuma. Due to the abundance of water in the soil, the Portuguese took over a number of hòfis from the 1940s and Mahuma had become known again for the many garden companies, as in the 18th century. However, a new development is also the planter of Haitian origin who is becoming increasingly active in this district.
The more intensive residential development at Mahuma, including the ribbon development along the major roads, started after the year 1930 and especially after the construction of the Jan Noorduynweg as a connecting road between Julianadorp and the refinery. Most of Mahuma is domain land, a significant portion of which is still rented out as agricultural land.

The Mahumaweg, which was a dirt road until the early 1960s and surrounded by tall 'datu' trees, which long reflected a rural character, has recently become a beautifully tiled residential street. This residential function spreads out on both sides of the Mahumaweg.
